Advanced Motivational Interviewing

Advanced Motivational Interviewing
(2 days training)

This course is aimed at practitioners who have done basic MI training and wish to extend and develop their understanding of the approach and its application to their practice. It aims to provide practitioners with additional opportunity to practise the model to enable them to use it more often and with more confident in day-to-day general practice.

Course aims:


  • Provide an overview of the model and re-visit its foundations.

  • Cover the main elements including:
    o Identifying and resolving ambivalence
    o Identifying intrinsic motivation and aspirations
    o Change and commitment questions and talk.
    o Identifying resources and strengths
    o Enhance confidence
    o Identifying goals
    o Drawing action plans.

  • Provide additional and sufficient grounding to enable you to use the technique confidently in your practice.

  • Provide an opportunity to familiarise yourself with the approach’s unique style of talking and questioning.

  • Explore the potential for integration with other approaches according to needs including Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), CBT or Coaching.



By the end of the course you can expect to:


  • Extend your understanding of the principles and practice of MI.

  • Demonstrate the ability to use the technique confidently in your practice.

  • Demonstrate the ability to integrate the model in your general practice and use its techniques alongside other interventions.

  • Gain in confidence and self awareness.
